Getting Started in Cyber Security: A Guide for Newbies

Hey there! Today, we’re going to talk about a problem a lot of people face when trying to get into the cyber security field. Sometimes, even if you have great qualifications, like a master’s degree, it can be really hard to land your first job interview in cyber security. But don’t worry, we have got some tips to help you out!

Understanding the Challenge

It’s like a catch-22 situation: you need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience. Sounds tricky, right? But here’s the good news – there are ways to break this cycle and make yourself stand out, even if you’re just starting.

Top Tips to Break Into Cyber Security

Here are some practical steps you can take to boost your chances of getting that first interview:

Show Your Passion

  • Make sure your resume and interviews show how much you love cyber security.
  • Doing projects on your own and sharing them can really show your enthusiasm and knowledge.

Create Your Own Experience

Even without a job yet, you can gain experience. Here’s how:

  • Do a Cyber Security Project: Build something cool and technical, like an Active Directory lab, and share it on GitHub.
  • Start Your Own Cyber Security Blog or Company: Share your learning and projects. You can even call yourself a Cyber Security Evangelist.
  • Publicly Share Your Work: Whatever project you do, make sure others can see it. This proves to potential employers that you have got the skills.

Make Your Resume Shine

  • Your resume is super important. If you’re not getting interviews, it might need some work.
  • Make sure your resume shows off your skills and projects clearly.
  • Look for a good resume template that is ATS (Applicant Tracking System) compliant, as this can help get your resume noticed.

Conclusion

Starting a career in cyber security might seem hard at first, especially when you’re trying to land that first interview. But by showing your passion, creating your own experiences, and polishing your resume, you can really boost your chances. Remember, it’s all about standing out and showing what makes you unique!
