Choosing the Right Path to a Cybersecurity Career

Are you thinking about starting a career in cybersecurity or IT but don’t know where to begin? Today, I’m going to share some advice for anyone who wants to enter this fascinating field but is unsure about which educational path to take.

Understanding Your Options

Let’s say you’re working in a different job and you want to move into cybersecurity, but you don’t have a degree yet. You’re considering two degrees from WGU: a Bachelor’s of Science in IT Management and a Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. How do you choose?

  • IT Management Degree: This is a great choice if you want to get a degree quickly and affordably. It allows you to finish fast and saves you money.
  • Cybersecurity Degree: Even though it takes longer to complete, this degree comes with valuable certifications. These certifications can make you more employable in the cybersecurity field.

My Recommendation

If you’re aspiring to enter the cybersecurity world, but lack experience, skills, or certifications, getting a degree is definitely a smart move. However, which one should you go for?

If speed and cost are your main concerns, the IT Management degree is the way to go. With some planning, you might be able to finish this degree in just six months thanks to transferring credits from other courses.

But, if you’re aiming for a career specifically in cybersecurity, I would recommend considering the Cybersecurity degree. The certifications you gain along the way are highly valued in the industry and can greatly improve your chances of securing a job.

Starting Your Career before Graduation

Here’s some very good news: you don’t have to wait until you’re completed your degree to start working in the field. You can:

  • Begin your degree and collect a few certifications
  • Create a strong resume
  • Compile an impressive portfolio
  • Start applying for jobs!

I recently talked to someone who did just that. They landed a job as a junior cybersecurity analyst without a degree or certifications, but with a strong portfolio.

Employability Framework

When you’re looking for a job, it’s important to understand that your education, experience, and certifications are all parts of what makes you attractive to employers. If you’re missing one, you can often make up for it in another area. Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Education: It’s helpful but not always required.
  • Certifications: They can show your knowledge in specific areas.
  • Experience: Relevant work or project experience is highly valuable.
  • Portfolio: Showcases your skills and past projects effectively.

To prepare for interviews, practice talking about your projects with passion and confidence. The more you understand your own work, the easier it will be to impress potential employers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right educational path in cybersecurity is crucial, but remember, your path doesn’t end with education. Building a strong portfolio, earning relevant certifications, and applying for jobs even before you graduate can significantly boost your chances of launching a successful career in cybersecurity. Always remember, it’s not just about the degree; it’s about what you learn and how you apply it.

Good luck on your journey into cybersecurity!
