Degrees vs. Certifications: What’s Best for Your Future?

Hey everyone! Today we’re diving into an interesting question: Should you focus on getting a degree or certifications (certs) when planning your future career? This question is super important, especially for jobs in fields like computer science and cybersecurity. Let’s break it down to help you decide what’s best for you.

Degrees vs. Certifications

First off, comparing degrees and certs is like comparing apples and oranges; they’re both important, but they serve different purposes.

  • Degrees are long-term educational commitments that show you’ve got a broad understanding of a field.
  • Certifications are often more focused, showing you have specific skills or knowledge that’s relevant right now.

Some jobs might want one, the other, or even both. The key is to understand what your dream job focuses on and plan accordingly.

The Employability Framework

I’ve come up with something called the Employability Framework. It’s a way to think about what makes you an awesome candidate for any job. Here are the parts:

  • Experience: Real-world experience can be super important.
  • Certifications: These can prove you know your stuff.
  • Degree: Sometimes, this is what opens doors for you.

To be an all-star job candidate, try to have a bit of everything. But, remember, you don’t need to rush. It’s okay to build up your skills and resume step by step.

Getting Hired Without a Degree or Certs

You might wonder if it’s possible to get a good job without a degree or certs. The answer is yes! With a great portfolio, a strong resume, and awesome interview skills, you can prove you’re the right person for the job. It’s all about showing off your skills and being prepared.

Why Consider Both?

While around 22% of employers want candidates with degrees, having both a degree and certs can make you stand out. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about showing you’re serious about your career and willing to learn.

HR’s Perspective

Sometimes, HR might ask for a computer science degree, but they’re not always super strict about the field of study. What matters more is having a degree and the right certs. This combo shows you have a good foundation and are up-to-date with the latest skills.

My Recommendation

If you’re planning for your future and aren’t sure whether to go for a degree, certs, or both, here’s my advice:

  • Consider your career goals and what employers in that field value.
  • If you choose to pursue a degree, think about options that could also allow you to earn certs along the way, like the Bachelor in Science and IT Management from WGU, which includes certifications.
  • Work on projects, internships, or even create content related to your field to build a strong resume and gain practical experience.

Remember, the most important thing is to keep learning and growing. Whether through a degree, certifications, or hands-on experience, making consistent progress is key to building an amazing career.
