Overcoming Age Concerns in IT and Cybersecurity Careers

Icon of Josh Madakor talking about how age is not a significant barrier to changing careers into the IT and cybersecurity industry.

Are you thinking about making IT or cybersecurity your second career and worried about ageism? Well, I’ve got some insights and tips that will help you navigate this field confidently, no matter your age.

Ageism a Big Issue in Tech?

Lots of people ask if age matters when you want to switch to a career in IT. The truth is, while there are many “isms” in the workplace – like lookism, nepotism, and yes, ageism – my experience tells me ageism isn’t a major barrier, especially in IT and cybersecurity.

  • In my jobs, many of my colleagues were older than me, and I am almost 40!
  • People working in cybersecurity often are in their 40s and 50s, sometimes even older.
  • I’ve noticed this in both government jobs and the private sector, including banks.
  • Even the security operations team and network engineering saw team members in their 50s, 60s, and older.

So, in my experience, age really hasn’t been a big deal. Of course, ageism exists, but it’s not as significant compared to other sectors.

Make Yourself Highly Employable

If you’re considering a move into IT or cybersecurity, here’s what really matters:

  • Focus on getting the interview and passing it.
  • Be mindful about how you present yourself on your resume. For instance, avoid putting dates on your degrees to not date yourself.
  • When it comes to the interview, it’s all about self-presentation. Be the best version of yourself to make a strong impression.

Tips for Combating Ageism

Concerned about ageism? Here’s how you can tackle it:

  • Do not date yourself on your resume. This means skipping the graduation years or ages.
  • During the interview, focus on making a great first impression. The halo effect is real – looking and acting the part can influence how people perceive your competence.
  • For men, this might mean grooming yourself well, wearing fitting clothes, and ensuring you’re in shape.
  • Regardless of gender, keep your health a priority. It not only makes you look good but feel good too.

By focusing on your skills, experience, and presenting yourself in the best light, you’ll be set for a successful career in IT or cybersecurity, regardless of your age. Ageism may be present to some degree everywhere, but in many IT roles, your expertise and attitude are what truly matter.

Conclusion

Considering a second career in IT or cybersecurity and worried about being too old? Don’t be! Your skills and knowledge are valuable. Ageism, while present, is not a significant barrier in this industry. Focus on your capabilities, prepare your resume wisely, and shine in your interviews. Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, there’s a place for you in IT and cybersecurity.

Remember, the IT and cybersecurity fields value experience and wisdom. So, gear up, follow these tips, and dive into your new career with confidence!
