Interview: Daily Life of a SOC Analyst

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we had a fun and insightful chat with Jordan, a gentleman who recently landed a remote SOC (Security Operation Center) Analyst position. He’s here to share his journey through our Cybersecurity Course and how it provided him with the necessary skills and experience to secure his desired job.

Meet Jordan

To begin with, Jordan has been immersed in the tech sphere for around five years, during which he had accumulated numerous hands-on experiences. He was previously an MDR Analyst or a Managed Detection and Response Analyst and had also worked in the government sector.

Before transitioning into his current role, Jordan revealed that his former position was a mixture of systems administration, network administration, and cybersecurity. His diverse responsibilities ranged from setting up user accounts and working on network configurations to vulnerability management and testing continuity plans.

Jordan’s Current Role

Now, as a remote SOC Analyst, Jordan’s day-to-day tasks revolve around monitoring cyber threats by using an EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) platform called Sen1. An important part of his role includes distinguishable malicious activities from benign ones to keep the system secure. He also enjoys the threat hunting aspect, in which he unearths gaps that an attacker could exploit.

Transition to Cybersecurity

In terms of transitioning into cybersecurity, Jordan shares that the process was fairly straightforward for him, although the whole idea of relocation and adapting to a new job profile was stressful initially. However, the innate excitement of being in cybersecurity makes the stress worth it for him.

Taking the Cybersecurity Course

Reflecting on why he decided to enroll in our Cybersecurity Course, Jordan reveals that his previous positive experience with our Azure Honeynet course gave him confidence in the quality and richness of the new course. He found the course beneficial from start to finish, and particularly appreciated the combination of videos and Word documents to follow along with.

Job Application Process

As for the job application process, Jordan secured his current position through a referral from an alumni member of a cybersecurity bootcamp last year. This highlights the power of networking and being part of a community that shares the same interests.

Job Interview Stage

As for the interviewing process, Jordan emphasized the importance of researching the company and the interviewers. He advises formulating specific questions about the company that shows you have done your research. He also recommends ensuring that you understand and can talk about everything included on your resume.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, Jordan shares some crucial insights for those aspiring to journey into the realm of cybersecurity. He advises patience and a willingness to start in roles such as Help Desk and work their way up. He also highly recommends getting a networking certification and values the importance of hands-on learning and trouble-shooting. Lastly, he shares a powerful reminder for everyone: this journey into tech and cybersecurity is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time, relax, and remember that being curious, passionate, and loving tech will make you stand out to employers. We hope you enjoyed this insightful chat with Jordan. Stay tuned for more such exciting discussions!
